Cleaning with Home Made Products

Many people have allergies these days, so it is important to use cleaning products that do not contain harsh chemicals.  There are many items on the market that are considered "eco-friendly," but are twice as expensive.  If the cleaning solutions are so natural, why not make them from home?  Here are six products that you can concoct in your kitchen for your housekeeping duties that work just like the real thing:

  • Homemade Bleach
    • 1/2 cup Baking Soda, 1 tsp. Dish Soap, 1/2 tsp. Peroxide.
    • This is a good solution for scrubbing bathrooms and tile.
  • Microwave Cleaner
    • Put a bunch of lemons in a bowl of water and set to high.
    • After removing the bowl, wipe the microwave down with a damp cloth.
  • Floor Wax
    • 2 tbsp. Olive Oil and 1 tbsp. White Vinegar and warm water.
    • The wax serves as a great alternative to those bothered by the smell of floor cleaner and is a secret housekeeping trick.
  • Glass Cleaner
    • 1 1/2 cups water, 1 cup White Vinegar, squeeze of lemon.
    • This works the best on mirrors.  The lemon gives them a streak free shine.
  • Furniture Polish
    • 1/4 cup Olive Oil, 1/4 cup White Vinegar, 20 drops lemon oil.
    • The wood absorbs the oil and the lemon cuts away the excess grease.
  • Drain Cleaner
    • 1 cup Baking Soda, wait, 1 cup White Vinegar, 1 gal. boiling water.
    • Peroxide can also be an option in addition to the water.

You don't have to buy fancy organic or green commercialized products when the whole idea is coming back to nature.  Therefore, would it not make sense to use natural products from the start?  Be wary of products that overly market "green," as they may just be using the trend to boost sales.

The ultimate goal in good housekeeping is to make your area sparkly clean, but you also want to make it a place of comfort and security.  Using natural products will ensure that everyone--even those with allergies--can enjoy the space.
