You've probably seen the stars on television with big houses and closets full of clothes that take up an entire room, but they don't have to be the only ones with incredible closets! Organization
The biggest part of a great closet is the organization. A clean closet starts out with good organization and is regularly kept looking neat with regular housekeeping. Getting and staying organized in your closet might take a little bit of work, but it will be worth it!
As you get organized, remember these tips:
- Group like things on several levels. In other words, first group by category, like pants, shirts, or dresses, then by another distinguishing factor. Grouping by color is always a good choice, and definitely makes it a lot easier to put outfits together.
- Maximize drawers and shelves. If your closet is big enough to hold shelves or drawers, use every inch of space they provide. Use drawers to hold scarves, clutches, or jewelry and use shelves for things like shoes and bags.
- Make a place for everything. Everything in your closet should have a home—each pair of shoes, each type of jewelry, every scarf or tie—so that you never have to search.
Decorate
The first step to making a closet shine is, well: light. Sometimes going into your closet can feel a little like spelunking, so break up that darkness with light. Replace your standard light fixture with something more interesting like a pendant light. If that's not an option, opt for a brighter bulb and add a lamp if you have an outlet.
Second, think of some functional pieces. If you have room in your walk-in closet for a mirror (even if it's hanging on the wall), an extra set of drawers, or even a small seat, go ahead and add those elements. This types of items will both serve their function while making your closet look more professionally-inspired.
Last, add some character. Even if you don't have a lot of room, there are a few things you can do to make your closet stand out. For instance, find a small rug that will fit in your closet and add it to the floor and hang pictures on empty wall spaces. This way, you get a little bit of luxury without giving up any room.
