Decorating With Maps

Do you remember the last time you pulled out a map for directions? For most of us, it’s probably been a while! With computers and GPS and smart phones with maps and GPS built in, there’s rarely a need for a map anymore.

However, if looking at a map brings up a sense of nostalgia, you aren’t alone in that, either. Maps can even be beautiful pieces of art and décor if you know how to use them.

Capture that nostalgia and old-world feel of maps with one of these ideas:

Lampshade. What do you get when you combine a plain lampshade, a map, and either glue or strong double-sided tape? An amazing lamp that’s great for an office or bedroom.

  1. Cut out a piece of a map to fit the lampshade, with a little bit of overhang on the top and bottom.
  2. Attach the paper with decoupage glue or double-sided tape. Fold the overhang and secure it to the inside of the lamp shade.
  3. Glue or stick ribbon to the top and bottom of the lampshade for a clean edge.

In a Frame. Turn a map into art with an actual frame. You can do a lot of different things with this to make it fit your space and what you like. For instance:

  • Cut a piece of map (perhaps there’s a country or area that means a lot to you—that’s a great option!) and put it in a large frame. Couldn’t be simpler than that!
  • Take a section of map and cut it into small, equal sections. Frame each one, then hang the frames together with a bit of space between to create the map.
  • Recycle a window frame with panes, “framing” the map with the window.

Wallpaper. There’s been a big trend in alternative wallpaper options in the past decade, from personal photos enlarged to fit onto a wall to fabric hung on walls in place of paper to stencils that look like wallpaper but aren’t!

Maps are another alternative to wallpaper, and the result can be incredible. Choose a wall—behind the desk in your office, a wall in your dining room, or behind a bed in a bedroom, for instance—and wallpaper it with maps as an accent wall.

If you’re feeling exceptionally brave, you can even wallpaper a map onto your ceiling!
