Does the Color of Your Bedroom Affect How Well You Sleep?

You’ve probably thought about how the amount of light and noise in your room affect your sleep, but have you ever thought about the room color being a factor?

Light, sound, clutter, and allergens are all known sleep robbers, but all of them are easily handled: blackout curtains or a night light, earmuffs or calming sounds, and cleaning services can take care of those factors pretty easily.

However, a recent study seems to indicate that color can also affect how well you sleep. What color are the walls in your room? Would you be surprised to discover you might sleep better with a change?

Sleep-Enhancing Colors

According to the study, blue is the absolute best color for sleeping. Those sleeping in blue-colored bedrooms slept on average 7 hours and 52 minutes per night, solidly in the 7-8 range that’s most often recommended for everything from health and weight loss to attention span and productivity.

Green and yellow came in not far under, both very close to 7 hours and 40 minutes. The great news about this is that green is one of the most popular colors this year, so if you were planning on redecorating anyway, green and blue might be the way to go in your bedroom!

Sleep-Defying Colors

At the very, very bottom is purple. Those sleepers in purple bedrooms got an average of 5 hours and 56 minutes of sleep. While one theory is that purple is a stimulating color and therefore makes sleep more difficult, it’s interesting to discover that the next two lowest were gray and brown.

Gray and brown certainly won’t be stimulating any senses, but they ended up only barely above purple at just a little over 6 hours of sleep.

What do you think? Would you change your bedroom color to try to get more sleep?
