How to Completely Remove Soda Stains from Carpet

110-1113tm-vector2-997Soda stains – also referred to as soft drink, cola, pop, or fizzy drink stains – can ruin any rug or carpet in your home. Stains can happen in any home and are an utter eyesore. Fortunately, there are ways to completely remove the dark spots left behind after a tragic soda accident cleaning products you probably already have in your home.

The first step is to immediately blot the spill with a clean, dry cloth or paper towel. It is important that you do not rub or scrub the area; doing so will distort the carpet fibers and cause the stain to set. Work from the outer edges of the carpet to the center of the spill to prevent it from spreading further. Continue to blot with a dry cloth, replacing it as necessary, until you’ve soaked up as much of the spill as possible.

If there is a stain left behind, follow the instructions below to completely remove the stain.

(Hint: Before using any cleaning solutions, ensure that doing so will not void any carpet warranties).

Removing Soda Stain from Carpet

  • Mix a solution of 2 cups cool water and 1 tablespoon of dishwashing liquid. If you’re trying to remove a stain that contains dyes such as purple, red, or orange, add 1 tablespoon of white vinegar to the solution. (Hint: You should not use automatic dishwashing liquid or any kind of laundry detergent as it may contain fluorescent dyes or optical brighteners that can adversely affect the color of the carpet).
  • Use a clean cloth to sponge the solution onto the stain.
  • Continue to blot until the solution is absorbed into the carpet.
  • Repeat steps 2-3 until you have removed as much of the stain as possible.
  • Using a dry, clean cloth and warm water, sponge the area to remove the cleaning solution. If you still have not completely removed the stain, continue onto the next steps.
  • Sponge the stain with rubbing alcohol and continue to blot the stained area of the carpet until you’ve removed as much of the stain as possible.
  • Using a dry, clean cloth and warm water, sponge the area to remove the rubbing alcohol and follow up by drying the area with a clean towel.
  •  If you still have not removed the stain, you can repeat the steps above using a solution of 1 tablespoon ammonia, 2 cups of cool water, and 1 tablespoon of dish-washing liquid.
  • (HINT: Ammonia can be harmful to carpet fibers so it is important that you do a spot test on an inconspicuous area of the carpet before using it on the stain to ensure that it will not cause further damage).
